Visual Studio Java compiler

My daughter is going to college and needs a simple java compiler.

I use visual studio for my asp.net programming, and thought I could hook her up with that.

How do I setup VS for a java compiler for her college? and or what do you recommend?

The teacher is suggesting the kids use Helios Text Pad.

Suggestions?

thanks!

For Java development these days there are basically 2 IDEs that are "standard", either Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) or IntelliJ (https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/).

Eclipse is completely free and IntelliJ has a community edition.

For my 2 cents I'd recommend IntelliJ but either are solid choices.  Visual Studio is a great development environment - but I don't know anyone using it for Java, just for C#, C++ etc.

There's a lot more support and much better chance to get help from others if she's using one of the "big two" and runs into issues than if she uses Visual Studio.

Eclipse is one of he most well known and highly used Java development environments. Another great one is netbeans. Similar to eclipse but more versatile and easier to learn if you are used to visual studio.
