30GB (29,165,994) Exchange 2003 Mailbox not opening anymore

I have a Exchange 2003 mailbox that i am trying to open in outlook 2007 and or 2003 that has a size of about 30gb (reported in Exchange as 29,165,994) that does not seem to open anymore, or at least outlook goes to not responding for a long long time and then if it opens when you click on something goes to not responding again

I am trying to migrate it to Office 365 so want to export it to a PST so i can bring in some of it to the office 365 mailbox

Very important mailbox so hoping someone can help me

I did read something about 30GB limit but thought it was pointing more to the client and OST

I am have not ticked open with cache mode so it is just reading it straight from the exchange server

Thanks Adam

Please confirm 30G mailbox, you mean on the server correct and not the OST file on the workstation?

Have you tried creating another profile in Outlook?

I would close outlook and delete the local cache (ost file), make sure you don't delete any archived pst files.

Then open and see what happens, could easily be the cache file is corrupt.

2003 has been around for awhile, do you have any archiving set, etc.

Its working at the moment

There is no OST its just reading it straight from the server

I am exporting it at the moment to a PST file, its done 1Gb going to take a while

Once i make the PST file i am going to import into office 365

I have not done Archiving on this file as customer has always wanted all emails available to him via webmail etc so moving to another file would not work unless i made another user that i moved the stuff to

anyway its only just until i get it up to Office 365 then i have told him on the import we will have to have a clean up

Will the 30GB PST be ok

Thanks Adam

No, 30G PST is likely going to become corrupt. I would segment it into two groups of 15G.

You should be able to right click on the users name / properties and see which folders are the largest, this will help while exporting.

Do you have access to the exchange server? May be easier to extract the PST's from the server itself using exmerge. Super easy to use and because you're pulling straight from the database and not using Outlook allot faster.
WORKS2011Managed IT, Cyber Security, BackupCommented:
It also will tell you the size of the folders.

I have never used ExMerge but sounds like it might be worth going that way

Will i be able to use EM to split the size as you recommended

Also how do i install is it just as simple as download the exmerge program i am thinking not as it looks like it needs the admin pack, where can i get that from download and also should i not install odirectly on the exchange server

Thanks Adam

I have a copy of EM but I have to locate the 2003 server, give me a bit and I'll create a download link for you.

the admin pack download here

I have installed on ExMerge now and it is picking everyting up

When i get to the part where it shows all the Mailboxes and there sizes it shows the one in question and then 4194343k 4GB which is not right, its 29 odd GB

Is there a problem or how do i fix that

WORKS2011Managed IT, Cyber Security, BackupCommented:
It may be the retention policy. If there are deleted items that haven't been removed from the email account due to lack of full exchange backup it can be misleading like this.

I would run exmerge and take a look at the data afterwards, it's likely to match what you're looking for.

Or, do a full backup of the exchange database and confirm deleted items were purged. If you didn't make any changes to the exchange server and haven't had a full backup done in awhile I imagine the retention policy is old and there is allot of data that can be purged.

If you have a USB drive server 2003 has a backup utility built in, run ntbackup see how much it shrinks the database and the users email account in question.

you can also check the deleted items from OWA under options.

Just update on this

Not quite there but almost

Have installed Office 2010 and outlook 2010 on PC and have made an OST via that and are almost ready to export to a PST and then into Office 365

OST is running over 30GB now almost 35Gb but 2010 seems ok with that

Only problem having now and it maybe due to a Currupt file after PC turned off but every folder is visble but the Inbox is com,ing up with can not display this folder but ever folder underneath is ok

Inbox very big has 419223 items in it not sure if that's an issue

Any advise on this

it wont export in its present state

how may subfolders are there? Outlook doesn't like to go too far, I believe the limit is three from the root.
