KMS Issue

We have a working KMS server in our environment. Currently it's set to activate Office and Windows 7. This works fine.

I am experimenting with server 2012 as a possible desktop replacement for our VDI environment. I know that the KMS server will not activate Server 2012 as I need to upgrade it, so I have activated my 2012 desktop with a MAK key. However, this desktop has installed on it the same version of Office that I have installed elsewhere that activates just fine, but the copy on the 2012 desktop will not activate. The 2012 desktop lives on the same network segment as the rest of the VDI environment where Office activates without issue. Does any one have an idea why this might be?

If you used a MAK key then the possibilities are  pretty limited.

You didn't use VL media to install.
The OS doesn't have connectivity to the activation server (firewall, etc.)
The maximum MAK count has been reached.
The key was revoked because it leaked and was being used for piracy.

Those are the common options. Then you start getting into bizarre one-off situations like the licensing service is corrupt, or a virus is already on the server, etc. Unpredictable things.

Try to activate office using OSPP.VBS

C:\>cscript "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /act

If anything, this will give you the error codes which you can then look up.

Another issue you may have is if Office cannot resolve the SRV record for your KMS server - in which case use the /sethst:value.  see ospp.vbs /? for more information on setting the KMS host.

The OP said he used a MAK key. Finding the KMS server has no bearing in the activation workflow.

Cliff, I used a MAK key for the OS as I know my KMS server will not activate the 2012 R2 OS version that I am using for the desktop without an upgrade.

However, I would think that Office would activate regardless.

Lester, I am attaching a scene shot of my attempt to activate Office. The key that is being reported is a valid Key that I use on other installations of Office and I should be using the same media in all situations. I have also confirmed that I can ping the KMS server from the 2012 desktop and I have confirmed the _TCP entry for the KMS server in DNS and I only have one such entry.

For activating Windows servers you need at least 5 servers up and running before they will activate using kms. Use MAK keys temporarily until you have enough servers installed to use KMS activation.

You need to install the Office KMS Management pack update before you can install Office 2010 KMS keys:

Peter, I have a working KMS server that is correctly activating Office. I have way more than the required number of Windows clients for Windows activation and Office clients for Office activation. It's just this Server 2012 R2 that I can't get to activate Office.

Is your firewall configured to allow port 1688? 2012 is pretty locked down by default. Since the OS wad activated by MAK and not KMS, the KMS exceptions may not be enabled in the firewall.

Firewall on KMS server is off as well as on the 2012 R2 desktop.

Try using the /sethst:<kms.server.here> before attempting the activation again - this will tell Office to use the specified KMS Server.  example:

C:\>cscript "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /sethst:mgmt02.mgmt.local

If this fails, try to telnet to port to port 1688 of the KMS Host from your Win2K12 machine - this will verify that it can actually make a TCP connection to the KMS Host using the necessary port.  The results of telnet should be that the screen goes blank - this is a good enough sign.  If the telnet does not work, then you have communications issues you have to sort out.

Naturally, you will need to install the telnet client to do this test.

Getting the same error. I was able to telnet to the KMS server on port 1688 and got the black screen and I could hit Enter and the cursor moved down.

I'm beginning to wonder, even though I am not trying to activate the OS, if I need the patch for 2012 R2 on the KMS server. I'd think not, but it is a MS product ):

For Windows 2012 activation to work, you need the following windows updates:

KB2757817   Windows 8, 2012 kms support

KB2885698   Windows 8.1 2012 R2 kms support

jhyieslaAuthor Commented:
Installing the update to the KMS server fixed the issue.  Even though I was NOT trying to activate the OS, only Office, when I added in 2885698 to the KMS server I was able to activate Office.

Appreciate all the comments. The ones from LesterClayton were the most useful in helping to troubleshoot the issue, although my decision to go and install the update to the KMS server was really the answer to the problem.
