"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Use a third party program like Notepad++ which has the feature to search files.
Find in Files

I've requested that this question be deleted for the following reason:

No more needed

While the question asker has no more need for an answer, an answer was provided in a quick and efficient manner - which is really what EE is all about.  Deleting the question will mean that other people won't find it, or be able to benefit from the answers - or see how being members is beneficial since you get your question answered no matter how "simple" the question is.

I don't need the points, it's more a principle thing - if you ask a question - and it was answered while you resolved the issue yourself - you don't delete the question - you post your own solution and mark it as the answer :)

Sorry, I mean I want to search all files and all other files within sub-folders, to find out any files, having one specific text portion. How?
LesterClaytonCommented:
My answer will do what you have asked - it will find and display every file within the subfolder c:\temp containing the text "TextToFind".

If you just need the list of files as a result - then a different solution needs to be found

Lester,
within Win 2003 server now, how can I call Notepad++?
LesterClaytonCommented:
Notepad++ is a third party program.  You can download it from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/

There is no cost to use it.
HuaMin ChenProblem resolverAuthor Commented:
Other than using Notepad++, is there any other way to search, for what I expect?
LesterClaytonCommented:
Unfortuantely the only method I can think of that does not require 3rd party application is the search built into Windows Explorer (installed via KB940157).  Once installed, you can index the drive which contains the files you wish to search, and once the search indexing is finished (will take some time), you can attempt a search.

The only reason I have not mentioned this before is because I could never use this tool to find the stuff I needed.  I have often had to search for parts of pascal source code inside some of my files, and never got relevant results.  It didn't work for me, but your results may be different.

I know "find" is having no way to search sub-folders for one specific text portion among the files. is it really no way to do the search, as I do not want to set up Notepad++ on this PROD server, that is out of support now.

Are you searching for a specific text string within the name of the file, or within the file itself?

You can search with "Harddisk Search & Stats" tool, it's a portable version, so you don't need to install it in your production environment. It's a very powerful search tool.

I have been using xSearch for almost a decade to do exactly what you want to do: http://www.easexp.com/xsearch/
If you download the zip file and extract it, there is no installation necessary.

I have also been using a tool written many years ago called GREP32. It is just an exe file that needs no installation, and it can search for text inside files case sensitive or not, binary or text, and it can display only file names or it can display line numbers if needed.
