Denial of Service Attack

Is there a way to confirm that an IP or a particular name server might be getting involved in a DOS attack?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi

Please explain your question. You OWN a public nameserver and are afraid it can be used in amplifying attacks?

query is ambiguous.
If you are being attacked and wanting to identify what is attacking your server?

I believe the name servers we were using (Godaddy, Lunarpages) might have been getting attacked, but I have no way to prove or otherwise understand if they were (unless above vendors will tell me and so far the answer is we have no problems here)

Out sites went dark for about 72 hours for no apparent reason.

So my question is, should this happen again, is there a way to "see" a DOS attack on a particular IP or Name Server.

No there is not. You can Ping the name servers next time you have disappeard from the big W but that only tells you more on how the load on those servers is.
Next to DOS it could easely be a malfunction or whatever.
