ESX 5.5 to 6

I  have HP prolint DL380 gen 8 server with ESX 5.5. I am trying to upgrade ESX from 5.5 to 6 after the successful upgrade of VCSA. I found some article about patching using putty session and vib command to upgrade.
Is it better to do straight forward upgrade booting with CD or patching? Does upgrade of ESX removes the existing vswitch and vlans on vswitch?

Also, do I need to upgrade Async driver upgrade before or after ESX upgrade  as mentioned in vmware kb -

Booting from CDROM (ISO) or Offline Patch upgrade, will both preserve the configuration. Which ever method you find easier, we prefer the Offline Patch method.

You can also use VMware Update Manager as well, if you have it installed, I have articles for that as well.

As for the Async driver, do you require it ?

HP recommended to upgrade using ISO custom image for HP or possibly reinstall instead of upgrade. I did not want to go through the process of re-configuring network settings, so I took my chances with upgrade and it seems to be working fine.
I change each of ESX to maintenance mode after doing vmotion of guests VMs and now successfully upgraded two out of three and now in the process of upgrading third.

For future upgrade, I am going to install VUM on windows server so I could test the image before upgrade. I would appreciate if you could post articles about VUM installation and configuration,

Thanks for all your help and references.
