Vlan 1 on Layer 2 Swicthes

I would like to know if Layer 2 Switches have the Default VLAN 1 interface. if so can we assign IP address to it? or can we create a new Vlan interface on Layer 2 switches ?

I thought Vlan interfaces are available only with Layer 3 Switches ?

VLAN 1 is present on all switches as default VLAN, and all ports are assigned by default to VLAN 1.
To be able to manage switch through web based user interface you need to have VLAN interface, you must have ip address assigned to switch (interface vlan), otherwise , you could access switch only through console.
On many L2 switches you can have only one interface VLAN, usually if you can have more than one VLAN interface those will be marked as Light Layer 3 or Layer 2+ switches.

Yes you can, Vlan 1 is the default vlan. Best practices is to  create another vlan to users traffics.

The default VLAN 1 interface comes with no IP address, so I still can assign IP address to it?

In L2 switches, can I create other Vlan Interfaces on each VLAN ,in Addition to the default VLAN1 interface and assign IP addresses  to them? if so what is the purpose of creating Vlan interfaces on each Vlan and assign IP addresses to them, if Layer 2 Switches do not support IP Routing between VLANs on the same switch ?

Yes, you can assign ip address to VLAN 1 (for management purposes), and no you can't create other interfaces on basic L2 switch.

On L2+ switches you can create multiple VLAN interfaces.
For example Zyxel XS3700 Series L2+ switch.
    Static route
    Policy-based route
    IP port moving
Also VRRP is present on this switch.
The thing is, technology become cheaper, and everyone is trying to find its part of market share, so manufacturers try to offer more features to attract customers with products that have more features than basic L2 switch, and yet does not have price of full featured L3 switch.
So, you need to read really carefully list of features before you buy switch if you find a cheap one and states that it is L3 switch(or offers routing etc). Switch may lack some of the features that you need, although it seems to be logical to have also those included.

I have not heard of L2+ switches, just L2 and L3

Speaking about L2, if I understood your statement we can assign IP address to the default VLAN1 interface but we cannot create additional VLAN interfaces.. correct ?
Then you be very very careful when you buy L3 switch, so there would be no surprises. There are Light Layer 3, that means that some functionality of L3 switch is removed on those (so those will be cheaper than regular L3 switches) .
And third time is the charm.
Yes, it is correct, you can assign IP address, and you can't create additional VLAN interfaces on L2 switch (like Cisco Catalyst 2950).
