"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are 2 parts to this.  The front end ui components and the back end. "Fast search access" is going to be a function of your data, database, platform etc.   " responsive " is front end html, css, and perhaps some js.

Mendex uses bootstrap as the core.  You can check out http://getbootstrap.com/ and they just started offering themes http://themes.getbootstrap.com/ that go above the vanilla samples http://getbootstrap.com/getting-started/#examples.  You will see they are not as refined as what Mendex is showing.

The next option are themes from sources like themeforest. If you look for html templates > admin templates http://themeforest.net/category/site-templates/admin-templates then make sure to refine by only those that use bootstrap.  You can pick up templates for about $20. But look at the coding before you buy. Make sure the designer did not try and recreate bootstrap which happens and things get hard to customize.  Many of these admin themes use 3rd party open source components that can give the similar look as mendex.  Better than bootstrap vanilla but not as refined.

Then there is http://wijmo.com/, http://www.telerik.com/ (including kedoui) or https://www.sencha.com/.

I would look closely at the telerik platform.  Like Mendex, telrik is both responsive ui (kendo) and full platform for apps.

As far as a platform goes (the fast search), look at https://www.parse.com/ (backed by Facebook) or https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/.  There is also amazon cloud services and others.

Yes, they are javascript based.

Looking at Telerik/Kendo, grid demo code you will see it is familiar
http://www.telerik.com/kendo-ui
$("#grid").kendoGrid({
  dataSource: {
      type: "odata",
      transport: {
          read: "http://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/service/Northwind.svc/Customers"
      },
      pageSize: 15,
      group: { field: "ContactTitle" }
  },
  height: 500,
  groupable: true,
  sortable: true,
  selectable: "multiple",
  reorderable: true,
  resizable: true,
  filterable: true,
  pageable: {
      refresh: true,
      pageSizes: true,
      buttonCount: 5
  },
  columns: [
    {
        field: "ContactName",
        template: "<div class='customer-photo' style='background-image: url(http://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/content/web/Customers/${data.CustomerID}.jpg);'></div><div class='customer-name'>#: ContactName #</div>",
        title: "Contact",
        width: 200
    },{
        field: "ContactTitle",
        title: "Contact Title",
        width: 220
    },{
        field: "Phone",
        title: "Phone",
        width: 140
    },{
        field: "CompanyName",
        title: "Company Name"
    },{
        field: "City",
        title: "City",
        width: 120
    }
  ]
});

All of the front end will be html, css and javascript.  Jquery is a javascript library.  Ajax refers to an asynchronous call to a source for a call back or inject data and is part of javascript.  All of this is the front end.  If you look at the Kendo docs, you will see they show integrating with Bootstrap or Angular, "Get full support for AngularJS and Twitter Bootstrap out of the box, or use your favorite JavaScript framework.
Use only what you need, without having to change allegiances."

Browser compatibility should be like anything else.  Look the docs http://docs.telerik.com/kendo-ui/browsers-support  http://docs.telerik.com/kendo-ui/browsers-support
