OFF-SITE BACKUP STORAGE DISASTER RECOVERY OPTIONS

Our current local backup solution has a DR option we could purchase that would provide cloud storage and if a disaster occurred they would off-load to a portable device and ship via next day air to provide full recovery.   The price tag is $600 per year for 500 GB.

The school has unlimited Google Drive space and we understand AWS provides inexpensive cloud storage for education.   The idea of having someone being able to physically ship a recovery device overnight seems like a more practical solution rather than expecting to download to the recovery site that might not have an ISP connection during the DR.   Another suggestion would be to contract with some local technology outsource within 30-minute drive with the idea of having them download the Google source to a portable device then we could drive it back to our onsite.

Is this DR plan unique?   Any EE's who can provide references to cloud DR vendors doing similar?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

AWS can provide a similar function of having your cloud storage shipped to you via a portable device.  This service is called AWS Import/Export, more info can be found here:

https://aws.amazon.com/importexport/details/

Pricing for this service can be found here and is charged upon how long your data takes to upload to the device rather than the amount of data you have as such.  Pricing can be found here:

You could look into storing your backups etc onto AWS Glacier which charger $0.01 per GB of data. Info on glacier can be found here:

https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/
https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing/

AWS Import/Expot would work with Glacier providing you a DR function.

More information on using AWS as a DR, please see the link below which has further information on getting the best DR solution for your circumstance.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Stu...
