General training on BI reporting - resources?

Where does one go to get trained to be a report writer? General training, not specific to any one database or platform.

What pre-qualifications should exist in a potential candidate for training in this role?

We'd like to separate this activity of reporting from the DBA role and we have an employee with interest in assuming the task.

I'd like to be sure we assign the right person and provide them with the best resources.

thanks!

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Not a BI person but for Oracle training, I prefer Oracle Education.

There are several sets of classes under the BI umbrella.

I would start there:

Contact your Oracle Account Team.  They should be able to provide better direction on how to separate the duties ad what training is necessary to bring the person up to speed.

Thanks slightwv, and a look at those links helps me to see how I need to clarify my request.

I'm looking for much more basic ingredients:
effective processing of requests for reports (checklist of requirements)
developer validation of reports, prior to user approval testing
user testing of reports, pre-deployment
report management, ie: change logs, deployment, rollback,

The training resources I seek would ideally help this candidate (and his boss) understand and appreciate that there is a lot more to the job than the ability to parse through an existing SQL query and revise it somewhat.

Credible industry sources are what I need. My knowledge of the requirements won't do it alone.

thanks!

No problem.

The basic ingredients you posted seem to be basic SDLC practices and should be independent of any specific product.

Let me see if I can find some other ares to pull in some additional Experts.

I am a senior report developer/writer.  I have a lot of links for specific training on the tools we use.  I don't know of any that are generic in nature.

What reporting tool are you looking at using or currently using?
I ask because the training for someone to use Crystal Reports would be much different than the training for using WebI and both would be different from the training for SSRS.  I haven't used Oracle reporting so I am not sure what the training or skill set for that would be.

The tools also require a different mindset and to some degree different skills.

Crystal can require so fairly in-depth programming skills while WebI would require programming logic skills but not much in overall programming.

Crystal also requires a solid understanding of databases, tables, and joins while WebI really doesn't need that since the database and table structure is hidden behind a semantic layer.
