recommended network scanner out there?

What do you guys recommend as far as scanning your network for known/unknown devices connected to it? Looking to implement a solution for this. And why do you recommend it? thanks in advance!

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

As far as passive scanning I would recommend Wireshark.
Otherwise I would setup Nagios

Wireshark? That's for packet capture and analysis.

Nmap is the most widely known free network scanner. Very powerful, but a bit arcane. Definitely worth reading the manual.

As far as knowing what devices you have connected, your router is the definitive source for it. Any enterprise router can give you a list of connected devices (MAC+IP). After that you can use Nmap for fingerprinting those clients.
