Yes you can connect a USB wireless adapter.  It will perform just as well, if not better than a laptop, especially if you can attach an antenna to it.

^^^ That's only 802.11g.

Anyhow, regardless, the 1W of power is no good if the router can't reach the client.  You definitely need a better receiver and maybe a better transmitter.

Also attached antenna to wifi usb is useless if the router can't reach the client
The point is the power of the adaptor not the antenna gain
Craig BeckCommented:
Actually, an attached antenna can increase the capability of the receiver, not only boost transmit-gain, so no, it's not useless.

Another option, there are TP-link power adapter to extend the reach It also has a power adapter to a WIFI extender..

Have not used them, but thought in your situation it might be a better solution given the USB wifi merely enables the desktop to wirelessly connect, the range of the wifi router is the other issue.

There are WIFI range extenders meaning they will repeat the wifi signal.

WIFI router                                                                                 wifi rep/range extender                                                   PC
wifi router wireout to TP-link powerline                                                                                                   tplink powerline PC

The performance will/could be impacted ........

There are add-ons where having one you can add an addon in a different room to....
receivers in different locations.

all depends on how far away is far away ?
all wifi equipment has a limited range, so check that
