Delays in Keyboard Input

We're running a Windows 7 computer and noticed that there is a delay when typing into word processors.  It seems the computer halts for a split second and then shows whatever lettering we're inputting.  I tried doing this over remote software and the same problem happened.

This is a new computer with a an AMD 8730 and 16GB RAM.  We tried restarting and the problem seems to persist, but has improved.

Any ideas?

Open Resource Monitor from Administrative Tools and click on the Disk tab. Check Disk Activity over a period of 15 to 30 minutes while working with Word. Is the disk busy?

Causes:  Updates to Windows or Anti Virus in the background, Anti Virus scanning on startup, Indexing not complete

Of course, do check for viruses and malware.
you can also swap the drive for an SSD - that speeds up disk read/writes
but i agree with John, it is caused by activity in the background, and should be terminated after some time, and or rebooting a couple of times

It it the same after you have waited some seconds after starting the application, and then type something?

Do you get this in notepad as well?

If you have this in MS Word, try disabling the spell/grammar check (while typing) - does this improve?

This problem actually happens in OpenOffice Writer, but doesn't appear present in notepad.  I'll have my client test notepad to confirm this.
could be an issue with openOffice then - try to repair it? or reinstall ?

As an alternative, you could try Libre Office instead.

Or disable scanning archives in your Antivirus, Open/Libre Office is Java based.

First, reboot the PC... (just in case it's been a year since this was last done).
Launch your program and confirm that the fault's still there.
Then, check Task Manager, and see if any programs are hogging the CPU.  Internet Explorer can be a common culprit - iexplore.exe

I wouldn't suspect a slow hard disk as a reason for lagging keyboard input unless there's a lot of hard disk activity in the background, which would be unusual while just using a word processor.
is this a wireless keyboard?  are the batteries ok ?

@nobus - the problem isn't present in notepad ;)
