What is a Seagate Expamsion Drive?

I have always been under the impression that they were simply external USB hard drives but it appears there is more to them than that. I had a customer put one on a 2012 server for backup and in the "Eject" icon it shows up as "Eject Expansion" and under "Eject Expansion" the volume shows up. What is different about an "Expansion Drive"?

AFAIK it's just as you think, simple external USB drive, with an added recognition ability inside Windows OS itself. Eject Expansion is just another method of "Safely unplug USB drive", which must be done prior to detaching it.
Let me just mention that those drives add quite a long delay upon booting up if your BIOS is configured to let boot from USB devices. It takes some time for BIOS to decide which drive to boot from, built-in or this external one, which is a bit annoying, but not harmful.

That is correct.

"What is different about an "Expansion Drive"?"

"There is no backup software included and it's lacking any security features. It carries a short warranty of just a year."
