Content Filter - SonicWall TZ 190

I accidently let the content filter on my TZ 190 by sonic wall expire, so I bought a new license, and activated.  Now it shows activated till august of 2016.  However the content filter doesn't work, all the sites blocked in the content filter work fine on our network.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi FrosterThomas,

THe TZ 190's EOS (End of Life/Support) was 7/1/2014. End of Support (EOS) is an announcement by Dell SonicWALL to indicate that it will no longer provide technical support, firmware updates/upgrades or hardware replacement for the product, and that all remaining unique inventory or materials will become unavailable. Dell SonicWALL may continue to offer security service subscriptions such as Content Filtering and Intrusion Prevention. So IF you ordered CGSS specifically for the TZ 190 or not would dictate if this is going to be honored by SonicWALL. Any legitimate distributer can only sell CGSS or Content Filtering renewal services if they are valid by SonicWALL. What type of license specifically was it?

Go to Licensing and verify all the licenses are registering correctly. If they are go to diag.html page and click on Reset Licenses and Security Services Info. Reboot the SonicWALL and assign the license again.

If all of this fails, you should contact your distributor who sold you the license and verify that it is valid from SonicWALL.

With today's threat landscape you really need to be replacing your firewall every 3-5 years. The older units simply cannot keep up with today's threats nor the bandwidth that ISPs are delivering.
I'd recommend purchasing a replacement like the new TZ300: http://www.sonicwall.com/us/en/products/TZ300.html

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the reply guys so I have dove more into the issue and have some questions below after what I've found out.

On mysonicwall.com is shows the code as active until August 2016, however on the interface of the SonicWALL it shows expired August 24th of 2015, if I hit sync with mysonicwall.com it doesn't change anything.

That aside today I went to a few sites and they were blocked, however other sites in the list were not, very weird.

If I buy a new sonic wall model, is there an easy way to back up all settings, exceptions and anything else in the current model and apply them to the new model, I am not very good with Firewalls and allowing everything I need and after trial and error I have the new one set up the way I need it.

Thanks

You are seeing this on SonicWALL's site because it doesn't relate to the device in terms of expiration...its only going off of the license purchased. It's not going to say incompatible...make sense?

This is because if you previously had SonicWALL Content Filtering previously your settings are still valid and set...you just can't modify them.

Your unit is so old that to go from your generation to a NGFW 6th gen device will not work by simply importing/exporting. If you had a 5th gen yes you most certainly can but in your case the deltas between OSs is too great.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

So while I try to talk my boss into a new sonic wall (hard to get him to spend money on technology) is there anything I can do to get the current one working correctly?   Not sure why I can't modify it anymore....

I did learn that if I removed stuff from content filter it would be open again.  IE: nordstrom.com was saved in there previously and if you visited it, it would still be blocked, if I remove it, I can now visit nordstrom.com

However I can't add things, so removing works but adding doesn't.

Interesting about removing items working.

It won't allow you to modify because its a paid subscription and you don't have access to it any longer because its too old.

I'd just tell your boss that this is something that will force us to upgrade every 5 years or so because everything is moving to a cloud/subscription model.

Provided that you have tried syncing the unit under Licensing page, sync with mysonicwall.com, there is nothing you can do beyond getting a new firewall. Then check with your distributor about getting a refund for the licensing you just bought - they really shouldn't have sold you it.
