Outlook highlight folder with new emails until clicked on folder

I got this working in thunderbird, whereby any folders with new emails would change colour until I clicked on the folder. This allowed me to keep the actual emails unread until dealing with them.

Does such a solution exist for Outlook 2010/2013?

No Outlook 2010/2013 dont provide this feature.
You can't change the colors however mine shows me the number of unread messages in parentheses. I'll have to look through the settings on where you can set that but for now you could hit the help file and search for "unread".
There is also the unread emails search which shows all unread emails in all folders in one view.  I have found this to be one of the best features of outlook/exchange (also the reason I still use Touchdown for email on my android phone).

My issue isnt to see the unread mail; I leave mail unread in the subfolders so I know they need dealing with. But because I have unread emails in the folders, how do I know when new emails arrive? I.e if I have a subfolder called 'Work' with 5 unread emails, and a new email arrives. The only difference is that now there are 6 unread emails, but unless I knew the unread count beforehand, I wouldnt be aware of a new email in that folder. Is there a way to make the folder change colour until I click on it?
no there is no way in outlook
If you realy want then you can try the third pary software plugin for outlook
