FTP best practice / service / sw ?

Looking for some insight/feedback on the topic of FTP.

What are the best practice options and resources for FTP sites, hosted vs in-house?

Hosted - Most popular(1-3) options being used and why?

In-house - Most popular options being used, setup type and why?

Needs/Requirements - high level - ability for clients to upload files(mostly large art/graphic type) to their individual folders, large storage, triggers to email clients and internals, when files uploaded/retrieved, etc...

Considering a new/upgraded RUMPUS Mac FTP in-house again, also see they have a Windows version.  Thoughts/feedback.
Note this is a windows shop primarily.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hosted - only when bandwidth is an issue (i.e. receiving is probably not an issue, as that's your download speed, but if you need to SEND files, it's your upload speed). I see no reason for having it hosted.

In-House - For Windows, it's done in just a few minutes, and for free too (Filezilla Server). User management is easy. Security is great (includes anti-hammer options). Free and easy software also means in case of downtime, you'll have it up and running on another machine in no time (doesn't have to be an expensive server, a normal PC would suffice already). Triggers are more difficult though, probably need to write your own script or app.
