Internal AD Domain Name Conflicts with External Domain Name

Trying to allow internal users to connect to same web server name that external users use but having problems.
My web server's internal computer name is ( is internal Active Directory domain name).
External users connect to this web server via
When internal users try to use the same URL it does not work. It's the "AZ" part of the internal domain name causing the issue I believe.
I tried to create a CNAME alias but it won't let me enter it without the "AZ".
I tried a HOST file entry (not preferred), but it didn't work anyway.
Any suggestions for how to handle this? Let me know if more info is required.

Create new primary zone for on internal DNS and assign IP to this zone and it should work.

Toni's method is the prefered method. Don't forget to add your external A records that are not hosted in your internal network.
