Windows 8.1 - cannot drag icons on dekstop

Hi,

I must have accidentally changed some Win8.1 setting. I can no longer drag icons from one location on my desktop to another.

Solution?

Thanks,
Steve

Right click on the desktop> view > uncheck "Auto Arrange Icons".

It's already not checked.
Perhaps I should uncheck "Align Icons to Grid"?

Thanks

If Tyler's suggestion doesn't work, also un-check Align icons to grid. It that doesn't work, try hitting the Escape key three times fast. I can't explain why that works, but many users have reported that it does work. Regards, Joe

Joe,
Unchecking 'Align icons to grid' does not work.

Now as to my ESC key, guess what? I have this silly issue where it's stuck in the pressed position. I've been able to live pretty well w/o it for a long time but wondering if having it pressed down is preventing me from dragging icons?

Thanks.

Yes, it's possible. And for lots of other reasons I wouldn't want to have the Esc key (or any key, for that matter) stuck in the pressed position. I recommend fixing it. Regards, Joe

I tried a can of air but didn't seem to work. Maybe time for a new keyboard. Serves me right for eating at my desk. :( Thanks.

Yeah, they're very reasonably priced these days. You could try to pop the key cap and play around with the underlying mechanism, but I've had mixed results with that.

Joe,
How would you suggest I pop the key cap?
Thanks.

Steve,

Here's an EE thread on the subject:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_28067344.html

And a decent article on it:

And a YouTube video:

A web search for "remove key cap keyboard" gets plenty of hits. Regards, Joe

Joe-
Point taken b/c now I DID forget about it. "Real work" and "life" keeps getting in the way. Will try to get back to it soon...thanks for the reality check! :)

Yep, funny how that happens. Truth be told, I need to let it happen more often. :)
