Outlook 2010 attachment opens randomly

I have a user who has an email in a folder of their inbox. Attached to the email is a Tiff image. This image is randomly popping up when he is doing other things. Any thoughts anybody?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi there,

I've never encountered this personally but i would check the following:-

- Disable any Outlook Addins
- Scan for Malware
- Check startup items (MSCONFIG)

Is the email from a legitimate sender?
Are you using Exchange/Office 365?

If all else fails after that, i might consider recreating the Outlook profile.

Hope this helps. Matt

Its Exchange 2007, nothing in Startup, only VBA and Exchange in addins. Will have to do malware scan later.

First thing I would do is get the user to log into another computer and open outlook.  DO NOT OPEN THE EMAIL WITH THAT Image in.

Does it happen on there?

Unlikely.  I would guess at a virus of somekind.  Do a full scan using your corporate AV solution, what do you use?

LATER? If you have any suspicion on MAlware then that machine should be off the network before you type your next reply!

We are using Sophos Enterprise, all web traffic and email is scanned before it reaches us. User has now deleted the email, which was from one of our customers. Nothing else strange on this PC.
Neil RussellTechnical Development LeadCommented:
Well emails can not and do not open themselves, there is no mechanism built into exchange or outlook to do this so there is indeed something strange.  Deleting the email that was popping up is not exactly a solution, rather it is masking the effects.
You now have a machine that is on your corporate network in an unknown state and without the indicator that you had to show if you had removed the actual problem.

A malware scan brought up 11 threats so I think that may be it. Thanks.
