Can't Scan - HP 8610

It used to be I could scan a document directly to my computer from my HP 8610 Printer / Scanner.

About 6 months ago, the direct method stopped working, so I discovered I could view devices / printers in the control panel & then right click the printer & select Scan.

Now that fails.

See attached.

Should I deinstall & reinstall the printer? It's connected wirelessly.

I'm having a LOT of problems with this device.

I recommend installing what HP calls the Full Feature Software and Drivers. Download for W7 is here:

That will give you the WIA driver that your error dialog is complaining about. It may also give you a TWAIN driver, which, imo, is generally a better scanning driver than WIA. Regards, Joe

First I have an HP8610 and it scans fine.
Second, I connect the HP8610 by Ethernet and suggest you do the same if you can.
Third, I assume it prints and only the scanner does not work. Correct? yes/no?

So then go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall the printer (Basic software, Help, and Update). Restart after this and go to Devices and Printers, Printer Driver Management, Drivers tab and delete the driver if it is there. Restart again.

Now go to the Printer, Setup, Network and give it a static IP on your network so it does not get lost. When done, power down the printer, wait, and power it up.

Now install the Printer Package complete and go through the setup.

If the setup does not set up the printer (happens), go back to Programs and Features and Repair the basic printer software. When done this will force a restart. Then double click on the printer icon and it will set up. Scanner should come with it.

I tried what you said; it runs forever. See attached, been going over 4 hours.

I'll do what John Hurst suggests.

I've never used the HP Download and Install Assistant — I suspect that's the problem. I recommend just downloading the file:

download only
It should take a few minutes to download with decent Internet speed. Uninstall the current software and then run the downloaded file. It should begin an install wizard immediately and the whole process should take minutes, not hours. Regards, Joe

I used the Install File from HP for that printer. The scanner is contained in the package and works fine (has done for all the time I have had the printer).

I agree about using the regular download method to get the software.
