I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is this to track what browser is on a website?  I'm trying to find out what's on a desktop?

I don't understand what you mean about a browser on a website?

A browser is a browser - Internet Explorer, Fire Fox, Chrome , Safari, Opera etc.

The scripts posted run in the browser and report what browser the page is loaded in.

Are you asking how you can find out what other browser software is installed on the computer?

Short answer you can't - the security model of browsers prevents scripts from accessing anything outside of the machine. There are exceptions to this - ActiveX controls and Java applets have the capability to do this - but it is not practical to use these as most users will have security options enabled to prevent these running in the browser.

What you can do is give your users a link to an application that they can download and that scans their desktops and reports what version of browsers they have. I don't know of any offhand - would probably write one from scratch if needed.

Many companies run asset monitoring software that keeps track of hardware and software on desktops - that might be an option if you are inside an organisation - if your users are in the wild then you don't have many options.
