SQL 2005 Express & SQL 2008 Express

Hi Experts,

We have an old Windows 2003 server with SQL 2005 Express we want to sunset. I installed SQL Express 2008 on a newer server. I created a full backup of the database to move and tried to restore to the SQL Express 2008 and received a size error.

I looked at the size of the backup of the database and it is 16mb. I read the SQL Express 2008 has a size limit of 10mb and SQL Express 2005 has a limit of 4mb, so I don't understand how the backed up database was able to reach the 16mb if the size limit is 4mb?

An ideas would be appreciated.

size limit is 10gb for SQL Express 2008 R2 not 10mb and 4gb for SQL Express 2005 not 4mb

Hi Gautham,

Ok, so i looked at the database properties and it is 16gb, not 16mb, so it would have went over the 2005 limit of 4gb, how could it do that? I relooked at the version to make sure it was not sql 2005 and it is sql 2005 express, so it is well  over the size limitation.

Back up includes the transaction log and data files. Can you check you data file and see if its below 4?
On the database proberties I see 32191.88mb
Database file properties data only 16574mb
