Seize FSMO roles

Hi Everyone,

This will be a very basic AD question but I just need a sanity check.

I have 2 windows 2008 domain controllers in my organization.  DC1 contains all of the FSMO roles and is a GC and DC2 is a GC.  If I come into work tomorrow and found that DC1 was dead, what would I need to do?

My thoughts would be to:

1.  Log onto DC2 (I should still be able to login, right?)
2.  Use ntdsutil.exe to seize the roles
3.  Reboot the server

Have I missed anything or am I off-track?

Thank you for your time.

Yes then after that metadata cleanup of that dead DC.  Then try to get another DC up for redundancy.

Don't ever bring that dead DC back online after you seize the 5 FSMO roles.

Thanks

Pretty much yep, then restore DC1 from backup using a non authoritative restore, wait for replication to complete then you could move the roles back

I would attempt to restore from backup before touching ADSI Edit

No don't restore DC1 if you seize roles.   Just standup a new box and promote it.

Thanks
