DB2 Log Shipping (Big vs Little Endianness)

Hi All,

I've got a conundrum where by a client is looking for a DR solution for their DB2 system currently running on AIX.

My question relates to the change of Endianness as the are looking to log ship between a Big Endianness system (AIX) and a Little Endianness (Linux or Windows).

We know, based on the following arctle (https://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPGG_9.5.0/com.ibm.db2.luw.admin.ha.doc/doc/c0005960.html) that Big to Little within the UNIX / Linux space is not supported, but the above mentioned article eludes to AIX / Linux to Windows as a possible option.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Hi Paul,

One of the requirements in moving binary data from one DB2 server to another is that they share endianness.  When you think about it, it makes sense.

Log shipping falls under that umbrella.  The log file contains binary data that is ordered according to the source machine's endianness.

I'm not aware of any tools to convert the endianness of items in the log files.  Using a small AIX server as a backup may prove more cost-effective than trying to force the round AIX log file into the square Intel hole.

Thanks for the quick response. Do that mean that I won't be able to restore a UNIX based DB2 backup onto a Windows based DB2 server?

I'm only asking because the back article from IBM is not very clear:

A database backup from one platform family can be restored on any system within the same platform family. For Windows operating systems, you can restore a database created on DB2 Database for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Version 9.1 on a DB2 Version 9.5 system. For Linux and UNIX operating systems, as long as the endianness (big endian or little endian) of the backup and restore platforms is the same, you can restore backups that were produced on DB2 Database for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Version 9.1 on a DB2 Version 9.5 system.

Am I just being overly optimistic and reading too much into this statement?

Hi Paul,

You may be able to restore a backup from a unix system to a Windows server.  Early in the life of LUW it wasn't supported.  Somewhere around release 9.0, maybe 9.1, things were standardized so that with certain restrictions, the backup files were (more) compatible across operating systems.

I think that matching endianness is still a requirement though.  Database backups are binary files and if you want to restore it to another server endianness should match.

But, export writes ASCII files, not binary files.  A value of 3 is written as "3" to an export dump, but 0x03 to backup file.  You should be able to export the data from any server and import it on any other.  You'll have to create the database structure separately.  If you don't have the DDL handy, try DB2MOVE.
