SSD and Raid 10

Hi Experts,

I'm looking at purchasing some new servers and am hoping you can help with a question.  I wanted to know if there are any issues/problems with doing Raid 10 with SSD.

Good quality, commercial SSD drives will work fine with RAID 10. I don't think you should have issues and RAID 10 provides naturally good protection against a drive outage.

Enterprise class SSD's have come a long way in recent years.  (I definitely recommend the use of SSD's for the OS boot partition, where RAID1 is plenty enough.)  However, I am still VERY scared about using them for very active environments, such as database servers.  When they fail, they don't always die gracefully -- they may brick completely.  Some of the articles coming out now simply state that if you get 3 years out of the drives, you're doing good.  If you simply plan on replacing the drives with the latest/faster/larger drives after 3 years, then go for it.  The cost of the replacement drives will be so much lower, that you'll enjoy the performance in the meantime.

Of course, if you don't have a VERY active environment, spending the extra money on RAID10 seems like a waste -- RAID5 would be be plenty and RAID6 would provide an extra level of fault tolerance.  If you did want to go with RAID10, more power to you (and more budget, I suppose), but just make sure that you go with the fastest disk controller you can get with a large battery-backed write cache to keep pushing data to the drives as fast as possible.
Many RAID controllers don't support SSD's, or they will just be too slow to get any advantage. So in most situations you will be disappointed by the performance you get. Conventional disks will normally work better, particularly if you use RAID 10.

@soadmin - I assumed by your question you would be purchase a server with a RAID controller designed for SSD.

I have clients with new Server 2012 machines with RAID 10 and we are using 2.5 inch high speed hard drives in them. This arrangement works very well.

In any case it must be a controller which supports TRIM. Otherwise the SSD drives will be overused very fast. You can use Windows dynamic drives to build RAID1 with teo SSDs for system and the data RAID with enterprise class HDDs.
