I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Windows server 2012 is the latest and greatest. There was talks about a Windows server 2016, but the last thing I heard was it was pushed back.

Windows 2012 R2 is the latest released version. There is a public preview of 2016 available, but no final release date has been announced, so it's a ways out yet. Active Directory is a complex subject. It encompasses trusts, group policy objects, user objects, computer objects, sites, replication..... you'll want to buy a book if you are just beginning.
