Recovering Email from Deleted Exchange Accounts on Windows Server 2008 SBS

In preparation for migrating our Exchange from premise-based (Windows Server 2008 SBS) over to Office365, we deleted a number of mailboxes from former employees that have not been used in a very long time.

In retrospect, we might want to restore 1 or 2 of those deleted mailboxes. Is this possible in Exchange running under Small Business Server 2008? If so, what is the procedure for restoring a deleted Exchange account?

Thanks in advance.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You cannot really restore an Exchange account, however you can restore an Exchange Mailbox; In the Exchange Management Console under "Recipient Configuration" select "Disconnected Mailbox" With Right-click connect to the local server, then select a mailbox (which is a mailbox from a deleted account) and connect it to a new account.

In the default configuration deleted mailboxes are preserved for one month..

If you have a backup of the EDB file then you can use Kernel Data Recovery for Exchange server.

This allows you to search your EDB file offline and also allows you to export the mailbox to PST. This is all done offline from your Exchange environment.

Depending on how long ago it was deleted they still maybe in the disconnected mailboxes as deroode suggests.  If this is the case then you should be able to attach them to another user account.

Your other option would be to restore the Exchange Database form an old backup and use a recovery database to get at the mailboxes.

Thank you all for the feedback. The accounts were deleted just a few days ago, so I will try to restore the mailboxes using the procedure suggested by deroode.
