What is your version of Excel. If it is lower version which supports only xls then it will not open xlsx as this is higher version format.

If you are using lower version of MS office then you may want to try the compatibility pack from Microsoft.

I downloaded your file and it is not an Excel file of any kind.  There are no ASCII strings anywhere in that file.  An Excel file would have some strings that identify the document section and some data.  That file has none.

I think the file is corrupted,

I have tried opening wit Open Office Calc and using Open & Repair. There are commercial programs available that might work.

It is possible that the file has been encrypted by a virus such as CryptoWall. Are there any .txt files in the same folder as the .xlsx file with a ransom note?
