Windows Domain External Trust

Hello,

I’m planning on transferring my current Windows 2003 PDC to a new machine running Windows 2012 server. The new server will have a different name but same IP address.

I have an external trust set up with another Windows Domain; will I have to re-validate the trust relationship between the Domains?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Install the Windows 2012 R2 server as an additional domain controller to your 2003 DC, then transfer all FSMO roles, see
http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2015/02/11/step-by-step-migrating-windows-server-2003-fsmo-roles-to-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
This will keep the existing trusts.

Also agree with the above, you will only be able to change your IP Address to the old domain controller only after it has been demoted. Once it is a member server give the demoted DC a new IP and then change the IP of the new domain controller.

You might also want to update your DHCP scopes for DNS so that you clients will have both old and new DC's IP's for DNS.

Will.
