Ctrix 4.5 to 7.6
I have a old ctrix install 4.5 and want to move to xenapp 7.6 with impact to users until we bring down the old servers. What the best way to start?

Yes thanks i will look over the links
Personally I would investigate a completely new implementation. If you are still running 4.5 there will be an awful lot of legacy issues and other problems that will have crept in.
Starting again will eradicate this. Yes, there will be teething problems, but in the longer term it will be worth it.

I agree with Tony. If this were my project, I would NOT do a migration. I would build a new XenApp 7.6 infrastructure, test you apps, and use Web Interface or StoreFront (preferred) to give users access to both. Once testing is complete, remove the old environment from WI or SF.
Once you have run for a few weeks on the new 7.6 then you can power off the 4.5 farm. After a reasonable period of time and there have been no issues, power back on the 4.5 farm, uninstall all the Citrix software, remove the servers from the domain, power off the server and then do whatever you want with the old servers.

Thanks all, I need to do a install that is bare bones, meaning the company does not want to do desktop just the apps. how can i just publish apps without setting up vitual desktops
In brief: Get the xendesktop / xenapp media. Install xenapp. Install all the necessary roles on a director. Install the vda on any non - director servers and publish applications.
Here you go. This actually covers a lot of the bases.

Funnily enough I have a document I have just written for a "traditional" style of XenApp installation on 7.6 that covers everything up to getting an installed enviornment but not publishing applications. When I get time (haha!) I will see if I can reproduce it in a sanitised format for here.

I actually have written this for Citrix, under contract, but they have yet to put it up on their site.
I'd very much be interested in seeing that when it's released Carl and comparing it to the one I've done.
I also had to include moving from a standalone DB to an AAG. That's a convoluted process. Well more than it needs to be, for sure!

Do you have to use the store to gain access to apps?
Do you mean the StoreFront Store? If so, not really. You can still use Web Interface but you will not have access to many new features. I would recommend you use StoreFront.

For My Citrix 7.5 farm i have users that need to map drives when they access and app. in 4.5 this was done via the Novell client. I would like to do away with the novell client if not does 7.5 support NDS?
ASKER
or is there a way that when the user logs into citrix the novell client is used to log them in?
XenApp 7.x only supports AD.
If you have Active Directory, use Group Policy Preferences or login scripts to create the drive mappings.

Hello all, I'm getting the message there are no apps or desktops available to you at this time. I added a citrix admin group to each app. I can add my account(domainAdmin) to that group and access the apps. I can add another account(domain user) to that group and can not access apps.
I hope you meant with NO impact to users.
You are looking at a 2 step migration. First, migrate from 4.5 to 6.5 and then you migrate from 6.5 to 7.6.
This Citrix slide deck explains the processes involved in going from 4.5 to 6.5.

Once your migration to 6.5 is complete, then you can use http://www.citrix.com/products/xenapp/tech-info/upgrade.html to get info on the 7.6 migration process.
