Laptop will not recognize Iphone 4g

IPhone 4G, Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series, Windows 10
When I connect iPhone to laptop with cable (I have tried a number of cables and ports) it is recognised in the My PC folder under 'drives and devices' as 'IPhone'. When I open its properties it tells me it is nearly full (only 839MB free of  14.7GB). However when I click on the iPhone folder it is  EMPTY.

I go to ITunes (which I reinstalled twice because of this problem) it does NOT appear under Devices.

What to do? Is there some setting on the IPhone I need to correct etc. Help needed. The material is there but I cant access it

I have tried to connect the IPhone to a desktop PC and succeeded. But I cannot access the material. The IPhone is listed as 'Internal Storage'.

I am enclosing two screenshots 1. Shows the IPhone in the MY PC folder (my computer), at bottom left under 'Drives and Devices'

The second screenshot shows what happens when I click on this IPhone icon (more like a washing machine than an iPhone).

When I click on this I get NOTHING, although I am told the folder is nearly full.

I've suggested iFunBox above if you just want to pull off files and data.  I use it on my iPad and iPod to copy data to and fro.

If you want to use iTunes to access the files and data then that is not the way to go.

Look at the suggestion here http://www.technipages.com/itunes-fix-iphone-or-ipod-not-detected-in-windows to update the driver.
