Cannot log into several sites on one Windows 7 PC, Why?

Can you see the characters in the password you are typing?


Have you tried a different keyboard?


Do you have cookies and javascript enabled in your browsers?

Usually this is the result of malware that had a hook into your system that was removed but left the system messed up.  It's been years but if I remember correctly, I had to uninstall and reinstall network drivers to actually fix this situation after having removed the offending malware.  It can also be attributed to current malware that is proxying your traffic through to capture usernames and password but the host site was taken down.   I would start with checking your proxy settings and looking at your hosts file.  Then I would use ComboFix from BleepingComputers.com to see if it tells you anything and go from there.  This one may be best dropped into a savvy tech's hands.  Obviously blasting the OS and reinstalling it would fix  the problem but that's a little akin to using a maul to drive a thumbtack.

Be cautious.  Don't run sfc /scannow lightly.  This will restore your system files to the windows original install and can often time leave computers if far worse shape than when they started.  Although it is often necessary, it's kind of a last result in my opinion.  It's a lot like reinstalling the OS.

I have never in my life seen sfc /scannow make a computer worse. It's nowhere near the same thing as reinstalling the OS.

Also in Chrome, when you are trying to log in to a site, does the URL display https: in red or crossed out?

Open IE, then click on Tools, Internet Options. On the General Tab, click on Delete and delete everything. Cookies, Everything.

Then click on Advanced and to a Reset. Choose the whole screen including personal settings.

Close out, shut down, start up and then test some sites.

Answer to quetion is yes a few sites are accessible but LESS THAN YESTERDAY, so this bug is workng on me.

Win7 sp1 32bit was installed in 2012 but i did not turn PC back on til one year ago. Could not log onto EBay...I asked you guys....No joy....so I shut it down until 3 days ago. Same problem, only worse. so I actually have only about 10 actual hours of experience with Win7. This was my first build. I can build them but cnt run them. I think U@ guys might remember that about me.  I am on a Win8.1 laptop that I bought in case something like this happened. Who knew? this would be my primary machine. Nevefr bought one before Win 8. not so bad.

ok this is absolutely crazy' I use a portable usb wireless adapter (cisco Linksys 1200AE) and have it in my hand but am able to print wirelessly to  a printer. How is that possible? Am I going crazy? Adapter of course does not appear in device manager. I still cannot log into EE or EBay Or MOST of my old bookmarks when it was only the 1 or two yesterday. I worked 11 hours with Bleeping computer AV and repair toolstoday and PC is lightning fast and clean but cant log on to much of anything now. Gmail yes. Remember it prints wirelessly to a printer without an adapter plugged in. What the ?????? It shows my wirless ssid from comcast router but it is connected by wire.  again how is this printer printing?  Pc is off so good nite.  I have to get one of these PCs going right. Thanks all D.

Have you done the following?

1.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings
2.  If the "Use a Proxy server for your LAN" option is checked then uncheck "Use a Proxy server for your LAN",and click "OK" Button and "OK" and get out of Internet Options.
3.  Reboot and restart and recheck your logins.  No joy then recheck the "Use a Proxy server for your LAN" setting. If the check is still there report back because then we do have to get really serious.

yes several times now. no proxies unless hidden. I am able to get on many sites but not EE or EBay. On ANY browser. does not accecpt UN and PWs.  Just like a year ago. Only on this machine and I still can print with no wireless adapter set to go. Thats it in nutshell. gotta get baqck to XP machine where all my documents are. Now.

Forgot Firefox is now unstable crashing each time  I load it.  Thakx for staying with me

OK will do but in middle pf  repairs & instructs you and nobus  & others gave me on the XP machine.machine . going to be a while.

Cant print.... cant copy, etc.

Xp machine is in good enough repaired shape to maybe use it a little bit. a note on that question in an hour.

LOts of functions are causing probs on both PCs. Bdlessed be windows 8 that I have not a clue about which I am using now.  In one week of repairs i feel my mind being restored from the official diagnosis of  'nam  and Adultery PTSD. Thanks to you all. Maybe I can learn enough AGAIN to start basic repairs on the 5 dozen XP machines these seniors own where I live.  I have helped a few for free, but I will still need your help guys.

SO much normal stuff is NOT working it is unreal.<< Dumb question yeah?  computers name is Alien III because it is all modded out like my 1st 2 aliens but I think a Real alien got into this thing. think I did something wrong when I put SP 1 in. THen I Put new stuff in XP and legacy in newer OS. Thats what happens after a bad wife.

Can I use same OS,  different license ? for new HDD? Win 7 ultimate?

I cant handle win 10  yet. Too old to go back to Ubuntu blah blah.  I have used nothing but ultimate or professional versions  OK? Will it work? How about same OS with different product keys?
Is there a site I can get the cou[le pf hundred MS updates between SP3 and end of life at least for XP?

I have the update CD after SP 3 Thank you for the  one piece info. We are still on the wrong thread but all's good.

FOR YOUR info: It was XMarks, Chrome and Firefox .causing the conflicts with each other thereby causing a bookmarks issue.  then freezing after all the fixes we tried.tHIS HAPPENED WHEN I TRIED TO SYNC THINGS USING xmARKS AND fIREFOX, THEN HERE COMES cHROME STICKING ITS NOSE IN AND i LOST MY emails on my iphone and no password.  had to go to best buy for the phonew 3 times and they did not know what i did.  Reinstallation of this OS fixed my synced phone if you can believe that.

Actually on this  new ly installed OS with Firefox, I am only getting ONE comment by Nobus and I am pretty sure you left more than that.  Maybe it was on my other question about XP PC. They both were acting in same way I guessws because I hooked up my first ever home network setup with Iphone, android tablet, 2 PCs and 1 laptop.  AND MADE A MESS OF IT. XMarks got involved and scred it all up. It is not an app for beginners like me.

Some of you who remember me know that If i used ANY INFO GIVEN ME AT ALL< I give point credits for what I learned.  

I made a beautiful slipstreamed  version of Win 7, which I updated on the DVD  to late august. Just 28 updates remained.  Only I few drivers leftto do...dont like to use win update for that. Running perfect. Vipre already caught a false pos from one of my torrents but all is good.  Now I have to pay my bills....not sure.  

If i listened to John hurst long ago, I would have been in no trouble but then i would not have remembered all that I learned (AGAIN) from this thread {all the 50 pointers were valuable to me}
Bottom line is that the problem was never solved. I never was able to get onto Ebay. Nothing left to try to do. REINSTALL.
All is good so thanks for sticking with me til you just couldnt bear it anymore.  Ill be back
when i try to reinsta win7 over XP. dont know if machine has enough horse power for the OS.
