Give Scores in SQL Query based on different conditions

Hi

I am trying to create a query that will give Scores based on different conditions.

For explaining the details, I have prepared a demo database -

CREATE DATABASE TestDB1001
GO

USE TestDB1001
GO

CREATE TABLE TestDB1001.dbo.Table1001 (
  xdate DATETIME2(0) NULL,
  sector NVARCHAR(255) NULL,
  symbol NVARCHAR(255) NULL,
  [Close Price ] FLOAT NULL,
  Volume FLOAT NULL,
  [Volume Percent ] FLOAT NULL,
  OpenInterest FLOAT NULL,
  [OpenInterest Percent] FLOAT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO

SET DATEFORMAT ymd
SET ARITHABORT, ANSI_PADDING, ANSI_WARNINGS, CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL, QUOTED_IDENTIFIER, ANSI_NULLS, NOCOUNT ON
SET NUMERIC_ROUNDABORT, IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS, XACT_ABORT OFF
GO

This is the query that I am trying to create -

SELECT
  xdate,
  sector,
  symbol = 'dlf',
  [Close Price ],
  [OpenInterest],
  [OpenInterest Percent]
  -- [SCORE] column needs to be added here, based on the conditions explained in the comments given below
FROM dbo.Table1001;
GO

Open in new window

  I want to create a new column named [SCORE] which will be based on [OpenInterest Percent] column.

 If [OpenInterest Percent] is,,            then give this Score

If >= 4                                                 2
If >= 2 and < 4                                    1
If < 2 and > - 2                               0
If <= - 2 and > - 4                               -1
If <= - 4                                           -2

So basically the new column will have any of these 5 values 2,1,0,-1,-2 based on the value given in the [OpenInterest Percent] column.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version-  12.0.2000.8, Microsoft Office 2013 x64 and Windows 7 x64

Please tell how to do this.

Thanks
SELECT
  xdate,
  sector,
  symbol = 'dlf',
  [Close Price ],
  [OpenInterest],
  [OpenInterest Percent]
  -- [SCORE] column needs to be added here, based on the conditions explained in the comments given below
FROM dbo.Table1001;
GO

In SQL use CASE WHEN ... THEN ... ELSE ... END instead of "if"
the values are compared in the order presented, and as soon as a condition is met the case is completed for that row

e.g. if a value of [OpenInterest Percent]  is 1.5%
then this is NOT > 4
it is NOT > 2
it is NOT < -4
it is NOT < -2
so the ELSE is performed and the result is 0

 if a value of [OpenInterest Percent]  is 6.5%
then this IS > 4
so the result is 2

SELECT
      xdate
    , sector
    , symbol = 'dlf'
    , [Close Price ]
    , [OpenInterest]
    , [OpenInterest Percent]
    , CASE
            WHEN [OpenInterest Percent] >= 4 THEN 2
            WHEN [OpenInterest Percent] >= 2 THEN 1
            WHEN [OpenInterest Percent] < -4 THEN -2
            WHEN [OpenInterest Percent] < -2 THEN -1
            ELSE 0
      END AS [SCORE]
FROM dbo.Table1001;

Thanks for the solution Paul.
Can we use the same method of "CASE" in those cases as well, when we have to do the SCORE Calculation for multiple columns in the same query.

For example, in the current case, suppose we have to calculate the SCORE for Close Price and Volume as well, along with the [OpenInterest Percent]  SCORE Calculation that you have already done. Then is it possible to do all these 3 in the same query ? Or we will need to use some other method for this ?

For simplicity, we will use the exact same SCORE Criteria for these 2 new columns as well - Close Price and Volume. Although in realty the score conditions will be different for them.

SELECT
  xdate,
  sector,
  symbol,
  [Close Price ],
[ volume ],
  [OpenInterest],
  [OpenInterest Percent]
  -- [SCORE] column needs to be added here, based on the conditions explained in the comments given below
-- [SCORE based on Close Price]
-- [SCORE based on Volume]
FROM dbo.Table1001;
GO

It is very likely it can be done in a single query. Case expressions can be quite complex and deal with multiple conditions. The best way (always) is to have a relevant set of sample data and then the expected result based on that sample. From that we can usually arrive at a solution.

I suspect you have the capacity to do this yourself by the way. Your preparation for these questions has been exemplary, so all you need is a move from "if thinking" into "case thinking" and that really isn't too hard once you try it.

Regrettably I am very tired as I write this and about to retire to bed, so not able to do much more than say I'll try to return to your questions when I am able to.

Paul is correct.  Also...

>Can we use the same method of "CASE" in those cases as well, when we have to do the SCORE Calculation for multiple columns in the same query.
Same query, yes, multiple columns, yes but CASE blocks are for single columns, so you'll need a CASE block for each column to pull that off.

See SQL Server CASE Solutions for an excellent image and code-heavy tutorial.

<total air code>
SELECT
   xdate,
   sector,
   symbol = 'dlf',
   Close_Price    ,
   OpenInterest   ,
   CASE OpenInterest_Percent WHEN >= 4 THEN 2 WHEN >= 2 THEN 1 WHEN < -4 THEN -2  WHEN < -2 THEN -1 ELSE 0 END AS OpenInterestScore,
   CASE ClosePrice WHEN >= 4 THEN 2 WHEN >= 2 THEN 1 WHEN < -4 THEN -2  WHEN < -2 THEN -1 ELSE 0 END AS ClosePriceScore,
   CASE VolumePrice  WHEN >= 4 THEN 2 WHEN >= 2 THEN 1 WHEN < -4 THEN -2  WHEN < -2 THEN -1 ELSE 0 END AS VolumePriceScore,
FROM dbo.Table1001;

@ Paul Maxwell
Thanks a lot for your reply and solution. I am a noob in SQL Server therefor I do not have much idea really about which particular approach to take for finding the solution. Just as you did this so easily by using CASE. Thanks for appreciating my effort in preparing the question. I try my best to make it as easy as possible for other friends to look into my problem, so that they do not have to spend any extra time then what is really required on it.

Thank you so much for the explanation and the link. That tutorial is excellent.

Thanks and regards
