Create video slideshows with images (pan+zoom required) with music via command-line

What is the best way to accomplish this?

For example:
I have:
- 7 pictures
- 1 audio file

I want to create a video that displays the 7 pictures for 5 seconds each panning left to right while playing audio file...

I have tried FFMPEG but am having major troubles with the pan+zoom effect... "depreciated pixel format used"

Are there any simpler modules out there?

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Please advise, thanks.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
