Does HP 15-af008AX Notebook and HP 15-r203TX Notebook support ddr3 1600mhz or ddr3l 1600mhz

Hi,

I recently bought a quad core AMD HP laptop HP 15-af008AX Notebook with 4 GB DDR3 RAM and 2 GB R5 Radeon graphics with 1 TB SATA Hard disk. I also bought a 5th gen Intel HP Notebook HP 15-r203TX Notebook

I am planning to add 8 GB of additional laptop RAM to both these laptops.

Does HP 15-af008AX Notebook and HP 15-r203TX Notebook support ddr3 8 GB 1600mhz or ddr3l 8 GB 1600mhz.

Here are two scenarios:

1. If I buy ddr3 8 GB 1600mhz, is it backward compatible with ddr3l 8 GB 1600mhz.
2. If I buy ddr3l 8 GB 1600mhz, it it compatible with ddr3 8 GB 1600 mhz slot?

Please reply as soon as possible because I do not want to end up buying the wrong 8 GB laptop RAM type.

Please revert for any questions.

Thanks and Regards,
Sriram.

HP list the specs for both notebooks as having DDR3L

You're probably already aware that the difference is DDR3L is capable of running at 1.35v as well as the standard DDR3 volatage of 1.5v so they are more energy efficient.

Lots of manufacturers treat DDR3L as DDR3 in their specifications as all the other functions are the same.  Depending on the system board a DDR3L capable slot will take DDR3 but adjust to voltage to all the SODIMMS up to 1.5v so battery life will be reduced and heat generation will increase.

In answer to your questions though, you can put matched 3 or 3L in either but 3L is what the manufacturer's have built the board for to reduce energy consumption and increase battery life..

Hi,

Based on your reply, my interpretation is DDR3L RAM will work in both DDR3L and DDR3 slots as it supports both 1.35v and 1.5 v specifications.

But, it is a risk to buy a DDR3 1.5 v RAM if the slot only supports DDR3L voltage of 1.35 v and does not support 1.5 v of DDR3 RAM.

Based on your answer, I assume that DDR3L RAM will work in both DDR3L and DDR3 slots as it supports 1.35 v and 1.5 v whereas DDR3 only works with 1.5 v and may not be detected in DDR3L slot of 1.35 v.

Please comment on the above observations.

There are no boards that ONLY support 1.35v DDR3L but there are board that ONLY support DDR3 1.5v.

DDR3L and DDR3 will work in both, the voltage DDR3L runs at will depend on the board and other SODIMMS already installed.

DDR3 will work in both the notebooks you listed but it will shorten battery life as the DDR3L modules already installed will run at the lowest voltage that's compatible with all the SODIMMS and so all the DDR3L will run hotter too.

Hi,

Can I be assured by you that if I buy DDR3L 8 GB Laptop RAM, it will work with both DDR3L and DDR3 slots?

Vice-versa, based on your reply, DDR3 1.5 V RAM will also work on these two HP laptops ( I am assuming that the BIOS will be programmed to work with both DDR3L and DDR3 RAMs)

Please correct me if I have wrongly interpreted your solution.

Sriram.

Yes and Yes

A DDR3L and identically specified DDR3 module will both work, the DDR3L module will use power more efficiently unless the board is already populated with DDR3

Hi,

The HP 15-af008AX AMD Laptop has 4 GB RAM installed in slot 1. When I installed 8 GB in slot 2, the Windows 10 64 bit OS is detecting 12 GB RAM, but displays the usable RAM as 3.45 GB. What is the maximum RAM capacity for HP 15-af008AX AMD Laptop. Will the laptop accept 8 GB in a slot so that I can upgrade my RAM to 16 GB using 2 slots. Or, whether the HP 15-af008AX AMD Laptop supports only 4 GB RAM slots so that I can upgrade my RAM using two 4 GB slots to a maximum of 8 GB. Please revert asap to this question. Thanks and Regards, SriRam.

It supports a maximum of 8GB - try your 8GB SODIMM in Slot 1 and leave 2 empty, it's also possible but unlikely that it will only support 4GB modules.  Hopefully you'll get much the same response to this on the HP Support Forum too :)

Hi,

The Laptop is supporting one 800 MHz 8 GB and one 800 MHz 4 GB.

I am closing this question.

Sriram.
