I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No reasons, no. Could be buggy behavior, could be connectivity problems (connecting to the update server).
Restart the computer and re-detect.

If problem continues then do the following:

1.  Stop BITS services (Background Intelligent Transfer Service)
2.  Stop WIndows Update Service
3.  Rename "C:\Windows\Software Distribution" to something else, ie "C:\Windows\Software Distribution - old"
4.  Restart the services stopped above
5.  Perform Windows Updates again

One way I use fairly successfully is to go to Windows Updates and turn them off. Restart the computer. Now go back to Windows Updates and turn ON. Updates should begin immediately is all else is working properly.
