About performance and growth of the network

We have noticed that our network shows about 80% of load during peak hours, that's why we want your recomendations about an strategy in case we pretend to increase the number of users and/or applications.

The network consists of:
A Firewall Foritnet200D
A switch CISCO Catalyst 2950
70 nodes (UTP Cable Level 5).
2 Windows Servers

Thanks.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ensure that all your workstations, servers, and switches are running on Gigabit network.

The catalyst 2950 switch is only 10/100, not full gigabit capable. If you replace this witch, you might see a positive improvement on utilization load.

I would recommend you to have a capacity planning procedures to ensure that available resources are used efficiently and effectively. This plan should be reviewed and updated at least annually.

Hi dimensionav,

How do you get to 80% utilisation. I'd investigate what generates the most traffic in the network. Unfortunately your switch doesn't support netflow but you can use MRTG to investigate the traffic load on your switch and firewall:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi_Router_Traffic_Grapher

the fortigate should also give you insides of your traffic - which host generate most of the traffic? which are the top protocols? top destinations?

with that in mind you could explore implementing QoS.

most of the time however it is users watching youtube or downloading torrents. if you can identify the source of your high utilisation you can plan accordingly what to do.

best of luck;)

same question, what is saying 80%, and as peak I would care even less, what is the average load or 95th percentile.  I can peg a gig interface sending a large print job, but that would not make we want to jump to 10gig sense it sits idle more than it is transmitting,.
