Is there a utility that will allow me to add text at the top of a PDF page?

Hello Experts -

I have put together a long document which is really a collection of 10 sub-documents merged into one. These documents originated in a multitude of places. That is, I don't have the originals in MS Word format or any other readable format.

The format of the combined document (collection) is as one PDF.

Does anyone know if there is a utility app that would allow me to label each one of these 10 documents as Exhibit 1, Exhibit 2, etc. while keeping these documents in their current state as a PDF?

Comprendez vous?

Thanks.

You can add text to a PDF document with Adobe Acrobat. I have Acrobat V2015 and I add text to documents.

Adding the text changes the document. There is no way to change the document and keep it in it current state at the same time.

If you have Acrobat, that can do it:
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/add-headers-footers-pdfs.html

If you don't have Acrobat and don't want to pay its high price, here are two alternatives:

(1) Nuance's Power PDFAdvanced. It has a Bates Numbering feature that will do what you want. Here's an EE 5-minute video Micro Tutorial that explains it:
Bates Stamping/Numbering of PDF Files with Power PDF Advanced

(2) PDFill PDF Editor has a header/footer feature that can do it:
https://www.pdfill.com/document_header_footer.html

I should have said that I didn't want to use Adobe Acrobat, given its cost. Are you saying that even with Acrobat you can't save the entire PDF with the text additions?

I can save the entire PDF with the text additions, but the changed document is different than the original document. I find Adobe Acrobat to effective at adding text and combining PDF files together. It is worth the cost for sure (which is not excessive anyway).

I kinda guessed that. :)  See my previous post.

Thanks Joe Winograd, but I don't think that either of the two apps you mention are going to do what I want.

The problem isn't consecutively numbering the pages, nor am I adding a header with a constant date and sequential page numbering.

I want to specifically add the text which says "Exhibit 1", and if exhibit 1 also refers to the next three pages, then they will be blank on those three pages where exhibit 1 appeared on the previous page(s).

Then I want to move up to page 5 and write the text "Exhibit 2". If that is only a 1-page exhibit, then fine. I'd then like to move to page 6 and enter "Exhibit 3". Get it?

Nuance Power PDF can do it. You don't even need the Bates Numbering feature if that's all you want to do, which means you can use the Standard edition instead of the Advanced. You would use the Header/Footer feature and simply put whatever text you want on whatever pages — it allows you to put a different header or footer (with whatever text you want) on each page (or a page range). It does exactly what you want. If you post six pages, I'll send 'em back with what you specified in your last comment. Regards, Joe

Hi Joe Winograd. It's coming up on 11:00 PM. Past my bedtime. Let me cook up a couple of exhibits as one PDF and send it along to you. If it works, I will be very much indebted to you. Right now I have no ability to put text on an existing PDF. You could save me an enormous amount of time screwing around trying to number my exhibits. Thanks for your input.

Sounds good. I'll be travelling tomorrow evening, so try to send it as early in the day as possible. Also, let me know the following for the text:

font name (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, etc.)
font point size (8, 10, 12, etc.)
font style (normal, bold, italic, bold-italic)
text color (black, blue, red, etc.)
text position (top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center, bottom right)

Joe. I probably won't get the combined PDF document to you until tomorrow night. I'm in no big rush. Again, if this works, it is going to save me an enormous amount of effort.

I'll be leaving for the airport around 6pmET tomorrow. If you don't send it by then, I won't get to it until Wednesday morning.

I guarantee it will work! Unless they're incredibly weird PDFs. :)

Hi Joe - Thanks for your help. I would have gotten back to you, but I have been feeling sickly. I trust that your recommendation of Nuance Power PDF will work just fine. - Gordon
