I am building a website / portal using office365's SharePoint and I am keen to increase the font used on the document details in a listing as the default is very small.  Can anybody help?

There is not any way to change font size through the default website editor.
You need to change the CSS coding.

using CSS is the easiest method.  If you are not familiar with CSS, now is a great time to learn - it's not that hard.

1. navigate to the page so you can see the field in question
2. press the F12 key and using the debug features locate the exact name of the field you want to manipulate (likely called 'ctx_document_details' or something similar).
3. Add a new "Script Editor" web part anywhere onto the page
4. Edit the script of the "Script Editor" and implement the style you want

Script editor web part would look something like this when you are done:

<style>
#ctx_document_details{
   font-size: large;
}
</style

That's it.   The hardest part is locating the exact name of the data column
