How can I send SMS text messages from an iPad?

My staff would like to send appointment reminders via text messaging.  They do their charting in the field on iPads connected to a Verizon hotspot.  They would like to send text reminders from the iPad over wifi.

I have downloaded apps like textme but I believe they will sell my phone numbers to various marketing lists.

Is there a way to send a SMS text message using Apple's imessage?

Thanks.  Jon

You can't. Apple designed iMessage as a service for iOS/OSX devices.
IT SIMPLE IS NOT an SMS gateway for anyone to use (who would pay for the charges you rack up?)

You would need to send it via email.  An example to a verzon number would be

Whatsapp should be able to help your team perform what you are looking for.
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.

Thank you for the responses:

Kimputer - OK.....I was wondering how that would work with imessage.  Can you recommend a sms gateway service or app?

Josh - Decent solution but I wouldn't know their carriers unless I capture it during registration.  Then my nurses would need to remember the domain addresses.  They probably wouldn't like that.

Kyle - I need to send SMS text messages.  It looks like my clients would need the app also to communicate with my staff.

Ah, I didn't see you had clients as well as staff.  Apologies.

With that information, I concur with Kimputer's and Josh's comments.

Yes, you can send SMS messages with an iPad if you have an iPhone nearby that is connected via the same AppleID and has SMS forwarding turned on. Works great.

if you don't want to do it that way, I'd suggest Skype or Google Voice. Both can work with simply a data connection on the iPad.
