Window Licensing requirements for server hosting 2012 Exchange Server on 2008 R2 network.

We have a client with a windows 2008R2 Domain to which we are going to be adding a member server with Server 2012 and Exchange 2013.

We know we will need 2013 Exchange User CALs for the Exchange Server 2013 installation.

As this will be a member server only, are the existing user Windows server 2008 User CALs still valid or will they need to be updated to Windows Server 2012 CALs?

Windows' Licensing sites continue to be confusing and unclear on the issue...........

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

No. The CAL accessing the instance of Windows Server must be equivalent or higher in version than the server being accessed. You will need a Windows Server 2012 CAL to access a Windows Server 2012 instance.
