best way to setup a windows 2012 server as a DC ( essentials or standard) and add sql 2014 to that server

What is the best way to do this.. I have 22 users that are on sbs 2003 now and need to move to a new server... they do not want 2 servers.....  If using VM's what the best way.. and do I have to use 2012 standard or can I use essentials...

Help.... I have been a sbs 2003-2008-2011 techie...    (note I am moving the exchange to the cloud)

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you will install SQL 2014, on the DC ,you will need 2012 Standart 64bits.

What I don't understand is everyone says to put the sql 2014 on a different server than the DC, when all along Microsoft has been putting SQL's and exchange on the same server in the SBS series.....  and it worked fine...

I just want to be sure that if I want, I can put the two on the same server without doing  a VM setup, correct?  The DC only is going to be used for the AD and file sharing and the SQL  (they use a program that requires sql to run 90% of their business).  There will be no exchange so it will be using less than what SBS 2011 is using now...  so in theory it should be fine.... right???????

Thanks in advance...

Yes you can put all in one DC, i have a Vm in lab with AD and SQL and Sharepoint.

But I asked if I can do it without setting up a VM.....  never did one before...

Yes you can.
