Making grid with div tags in HTML

HI,
I tried the following code :
<div>hi</div>
<div>bye</div>

This shows output as :
hi
bye

The results are printed vertically.
What i want to actually achieve is create a 5 x 5 grid of black color.
I am unable to do this as whenever i create a new div it always comes vertically down.
How to make 5 x 5 grid and place elements horizontally and vertically using HTML CSS.

Thanks

The simple answer is to float left and make the inner div's 20% width
