What dictates the the brightness of a projector?

If I have a projector speced at 2100 lumens can I assume that that is all we're going to get from it?

Can you get a bulb that increases the lumens?

Can a dying bulb cause the display to be dimmer or do bulbs just die?

Yes the lumens determine the brightness of the projector.  It's probably what you will get when "new".

Most manufacturers rate their lamp life, not to failure, but to the point where the lamp is half as bright as it was when new which means your projector will be noticeably, but not drastically dimmer as it approaches the end of its rated life.  It's also possible for the bulbs to just die.  They are no different than any other bulbs so either situation is possible.

As a rule, you cannot change the bulb type because the socket, the voltage and interpolation type are all mixed up in the bulb. I don't know of any projectors where you can do as you are suggesting.
