Problems Migrating to 2012 R2 Essentials

I have been messing with migrating a 2003 Standard to 2012 R2 Essentials using this article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn408633.aspx

I don't like the way it keeps jumping here and there but I hit a snag on step 2. Actually installing the Essentials. It says to ignore the Essentials Configuration Wizard and if it pops up to just cancel it. OK. So I installed AD services and joined the domain. Things looked good until I tried opening up the Dashboard and of course it came back and said I needed to complete the Configuration Wizard. Now for some reason the Configuration Wizard won't complete. I can kind of tell why... it asks for the computer name, internal domain, etc. and .... it had already been joined to the existing domain. So is there any way to complete the Configuration Wizard at this point?

It is a little confusing. It tells you to cancel it yet you can't get in to the Dashboard without completing it.....

Yes, you cancel the wizard. You have to in order to join the existing domain. Then, after you join the domain (and that has to complete) you restart the wizard and complete it. It should see that it is already joined to a domain and do its thing.

Note that this is *only* true for 2012 R2, which is the document you linked to. But if your question just 2012 and you aren't on 2012 R2, the migration process is very different and you will be looking at a full reinstall.

Whatever the issue it is consistent.  I re-did it from ground zero. It forest prepped, domain prepped and replicated but at this point I still can't get past the Configure Windows Server Essentials wizard.

Right when it comes up is states that the server has been set up to a domain member and says click configure so set up Windows Server Essentials on the domain member. That right there makes me wonder. I click configure and almost immediately it comes back with a "Please click retry. If the issue still exists please refer to the help link for more troubleshooting steps" but doesn't really give any explicit error.
