I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's unclear exactly what is your question.

It sounds like you're not looking for Safe mode in the correct location. On the menu where you see Airplane mode, press and HOLD the Power Off menu choice until the 'safe mode?' dialog appears.

I had the same issue.  You need to use the alternative method: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-107067/

Turn off your phone.

Press the power button until you see the logo appear on screen then release

When you see the logo, hold down the "Volume Down" button until you phone fully boots.  It should say "safe mode" in the bottom left.

Note that using the alternate method might reset some settings (such as wallpaper) to default.
