I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

blue screen is usually caused by hardware failure.

check this article to know how to troubleshoot it:

Your best bet is to use the options in the F8 menu.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER. (If Repair your computer is not listed as an option, then your computer does not include Startup Repair as a preinstalled recovery option. You would need recovery disks.) If you require recovery disks to get your system back online, you will likely lose your data. Contact your manufacturer HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc and inquire about receiving recovery disks. They usually cost between $35-$50 depending on the system. If you can select startup recovery process the rest of the steps below.

Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.

Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem and, if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

If that initial repair does not work, you can try the following after your press F8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392

What about your data? Is it backed up? If not is the drive SATA and is is possible you can remove to recover? Pretty easy with an adapter, pretty cheap too, around $10.

If you don't have data to worry about I agree with Matthew 100%
nobusCommented:
boot with a live cd - or hook the disk to a working system, so you can upload the minidmp
you find it in windows\minidumps
then we can see what is the cause

Try to use one of your previously created system restore points. You can do it via System Repair - advanced - restore points.

to clarify you took the drive out and tested in another computer? If so not a good troubleshooting practice.
brian ramdhaniCT Technician Author Commented:
well i put it in there to see if it would have boot and it didn't???

What should i do instead then??

If the drive is connected internally on another machine (as a second drive) then you need to go to a website of HDD venor (look for vendor name on bad HDD) and dounload there a test utility. Seagate makes Seatools and WD wdDiag tool. You will find such tools for almost each drive. Download it and perform short and long tests. Only they will show if the drive is ok.

It's a Hitachi HD

at this point the time spent is way past due. I would buy a new drive, replace it then connect the old drive with a USB connector (about $12) and go from here.

To add to Works2011 solution you may also need to contact your computer manufacturer and obtain a set of recovery disks. To reinstall your operating system and system back to factory default. Don't forget to get the same size hard drive or larger, I would recommend Western Digital; in my 21+ years of experience I hardly ever see a WD drive in my shop causing issues for a customer. Then proceed with Works2011 solution connecting your hard drive either via a USB adapter to SATA to download the content. Don't be surprised if the content is not accessible because it looks like you might have a bad drive all together. Once you get back up and running, install a Google Drive (Free) to store your important documents or invest in quality backup software. I happen to love Code42/CrashPlan or Itronis can do a bear metal (complete system restore) and have you up and running in less than 15 minutes so they say.

you can test the drive with drive fitness test; find it on the UBCD:
Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/                        ultimate boot cd
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html             download page

**  you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick

If I take out a working hard drive from another laptop and put it in the pc that this HD belongs to

Is it supposed to boot???
nobusCommented:
NO - you don't boot from it - you use it as 2nd drive
brian ramdhaniCT Technician Author Commented:
I meant if the working hard drive supposed to boot in another pc

Not the HD that gets bluescreen
nobusCommented:
it is always a bad idea to use a boot drive on other hardware  -except when the hardware are identical
why would you want to do that, anyway?
brian ramdhaniCT Technician Author Commented:
To make sure that the computer is working that is why

Don't want to buy a hard drive and find the problem is not solved
nobusCommented:
you can find that out by running from a live knoppix cd :
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html

also - when disk and ram test out fine - there are many chances the pc works
