Upgrading Domain from 2008 to 2012

Hello.    This question has been asked many times but as I read though all the answers it still left me uncertain what to do.   My environment is quite small and simple.    We currently have 2 domain controllers running windows 2008 R2 64 bit.      They both run DNS, WINS, DHCP etc...    so I would prefer to do an in-place upgrade if possible.       I have read its possible but not recommended.      And I cannot find any guides on the process if I do upgrade.

So the questions I still struggle with are .    Should I upgrade as this seems much easier to me.     If so is there a guide on the upgrade process.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

here is a document on an in-place upgrade

Performing an in place upgrade of Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2

but yes, always a good idea to start with a new server and migrate things over
if something goes wrong during the upgrade process, you might have to rebuild anyway

thanks for the articles.. however since they do not specifically reference domain controllers should I assume it is that simple?   Unless of course something goes wrong.

Secondly since I have 2 domain controllers and one is virtual could I not just do the virtual server first and if things go wrong restore image from backup?     Easy roll back plan unless I am not thinking of something?

You can move all the roles on the Physical server except Schema Master role before running the adprep commands. In addition to that you can also take snapshot of Virtual Server before running adprep commands.
