Exchange 2013 Server losing Connection Once a Week

I have three servers

Exchange - server 2012 running exchange 2013
AD - Server 2012 R2
App - Server 2012 R2

They are all on one box and I access them either through remote desktop or using Vsphere.

For the last month at least once a week our exchange server loses connection and mail flow stops, a simple restart and everything is fine and mail starts flowing again, however a week later same issue, never the same time though it varies.

I have run trend, malware bytes and norton eraser on all three and found nothing.

I have them all up to date with windows updates.

I can't figure out why it loses connection and a restart and it is fine again.

Any ideas?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Either you remove AD/App from this server. Or Remove and install Exchange on another server. That will take care your issue.
FosterThomasAuthor Commented:
That's not an option, and I should add that this set up worked flawlessly for 18 months not one single issue.   So I don't see a reason to have to move exchange, when it was working perfectly, something is causing the issue that only started with in the last few weeks.
AmitIT ArchitectCommented:
I know, however Exchange should be kept on separate server, especially not to be installed with AD. Remember Exchange is a Server OS not an application/software you can run with others on same machine.

As far as your issue, you need to start focusing on system and application logs, when it fails and review the errors prior to issue started. That will help you to figure out, what is going on.

It's on the same box but not the same server as AD

AD is on a 2012 R2 server
Exchange is on a 2012 server

Just happened to be stored on the same box

So all of them are virtualized with VMware? Have you installed/updated VMware tools? Are you using VMXNET3 for your Exchange/DCs?

What backup you are using?

FosterThomasAuthor Commented:
Yes they are virtualized, I access them through Vsphere and not sure how update that VMware tool.

I wasnt here when it was set up, so how do I tell if VMXNET3 is being used.

The back up software is called web central

Maybe you can try removing and re-adding ethernet adapter.

Only Exchange loses connectivity?
FosterThomasAuthor Commented:
Yes only Exchange loses connectivity, I don't restart the other servers when it happens.   The App and AD server stay up, only Exchange shows the exclamation point over the network adapter in the tray and a restart and it's back online.

Refer this for how to change to VMXNET3

At the mean time check for the events in the exchange for a better clue.

It happened again last night, however it was from 745 till about 9pm, below are the symptoms that happened that seem weird to me but might make more sense to others.

I wasn't in the office but got a text from an employee saying an email someone said they were sending them didn't come through.

So I checked my email app on my phone and it said it was up to date (no new emails, just said it was up to date as of the current time).  So I sent myself an email from my personal email to my work email, it didn't go through.

I decided to try to login to owa from my phone, in which I could login just fine, and I tried sending an email from owa to my personal email, it left my outbox and said sent but  never came to my personal email.

So it seems like the emails are leaving individual mailboxes just not being routed past the server.

I was not at home and was going to restart and look at the logs when I got home, however around 9 all emails started coming in and sending properly again, so it's like for 90 minutes the routing of emails got stuck but OWA was workign the whole time if internet to that server was down I wouldn't have been able to access OWA.

I can find nothing in the event viewer at all for the time frame that is an error, this is very weird.
FosterThomasAuthor Commented:
I did just find this error that I must have overlooked before, however there is a terabyte left of free space on that drive so not sure what it means
Zacharia KurianAdministrator- Data Center & NetworkCommented:
As per your attachment the event id 1006 is bug in CU2. Could you tell us what CU is applied? If it is on CU2 there is a workaround which I will post once you confirm the CU.

Take a full backup of your server and then follow the below;

For the error you have attached, please  disable the database drive space trigger. To do so, go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\\Bin\Microsoft.Exchange.Diagnostics.Service.exe.config
Search for “databasedrivespacetrigger” and change the “True” to False”
